Last night, we went to see a concert with Styx, Kansas, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. I wasn't familiar enough with any of the bands to have paid to go (in fact, I expected something country-sounding from Kansas, and I had a vague diabolical impression of Styx). But Alaina had gotten free tickets through her work. The concert was great; I really enjoyed all three bands, and I'll search out more music by these bands.

Random bits:

- I really liked the bluesy harmonica playing of the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

- Kansas seemed to be showing their age a bit.

- Tommy Shaw of Styx has gorgeous hair. He could be in conditioner commercials.

- Tommy Shaw had pretty bad laryngitis--but he was open about it, and made clear that he was pressing on and giving the best show he could despite the laryngitis. And that really added something to the show--I appreciated his willingness to give it his all when his all was less than usual.

- Styx really seemed to be having a great time. They were all smiling and horsing around with each other--it was really a lot of fun to see them.

Wow, I had no idea that Kansas and Styx were still around. (I have some 20+-year-old vinyl I could lend you, if you like.)

Heh, I have several Styx and Kansas albums on CD... I grew up listening to that stuff with my mom. Still listen to it sometimes. I had no idea whether they were still around or touring or, heck, alive, even.
