Gas

You may remember how delighted I was to see a sharp decrease in our gas bill a couple of months after our major home repair work.

That decrease has continued. In fact, our latest gas bill says that over October and November combined, we used a total of 0.0 MCF of gas. Zero.

This does not delight me. This is too good to be true. We've turned on the heat in these months, and we've been continuing our practice of taking hot showers; we should be using some gas.

So I called the gas company. The customer service representative was flummoxed by my call ("You're calling because your gas bill is too low?") but said he'd send out someone to check it out.

I basically feel happy about this decision. I value my feeling of personal integrity more than the savings of keeping quiet about this.

But here's the rub: I want my integrity to be appreciated. If there's a problem, I want the gas company to appreciate my bringing it to their attention, and cut me some slack about it. But I fear that they won't, because a vast corporation has no policies for acknowledging honesty--and I'll be surprised by a large bill.
