I got a notice today from the IRS, inquiring about a discrepancy between my return for 2009 and information they'd received from other sources. Someone worked really hard on the tone of that notice, because the feeling I got was not "OMG I'll go to prison for tax fraud" but "okay, I just need to explain things to them and it will work out." (It is also possible that this feeling is further evidence of my privilege as a well-to-do straight white male.)

I do feel that the facts are on my side, though I may have erred when filling things out. But though I feel the risk is low, the liability that I'd incur if I were wrong would be about half my annual salary. So I'm a little bit nervous.
