Tax

Forest Hills' local taxes bug me a bit.

It's not that I think they're unreasonably high - they're much lower than Pittsburgh's, enough so that I sometimes wonder if I should be paying more.

But Apple doesn't do withholding for Forest Hills, and I'm irregular about paying my estimated taxes. So I would pay penalties - but the tax forms I get don't tell me how to calculate the penalties. So I end up having to talk to a person to find out how much I have to pay, which compounds the hassle of paying.

This year, I had a good experience: the lady in the office corrected a mistake of mine about what income was taxable, which ended up saving me hundreds of dollars.

She also made me realize that I've been making the fundamental attribution error about her. I've characterized her as crabby, but that was a mistake. I've been interacting with her mostly on April 15, and I'm sure every person who works in a tax office is unusually crabby on April 15. I found her much more pleasant and helpful on April 7.
