Reading Between the Signs
Mar. 5th, 2003 08:58 amI've often maintained that warning signs indicate what the signmakers are really worried about, which implies that they consider it common enough to worry about. With that in mind, I share these signs that I've seen around Cupertino:
- "Red light violation has minimum fine of $281" (Seen at almost every red light)
- "Right turn on red only from far right lane"
- "U-turn only from far left lane"
- "Driving includes Stopping" (Seen on a bus, with a picture of a stop sign)
The conclusions, I think, are self-evident.

Date: 2003-03-05 11:00 am (UTC)The last ("last" as in "final") time that I drove in Boston, I observed the following. I was on a road that had three lanes going in my direction. As we approached an intersection, someone in the right-most lane signalled left. Foolish Pittsburgher that I was, I thought this meant he was going to shift into the center lane. I was completely unprepared for the U turn he actually made. A native later explained to me that people don't signal lane changes, so the only ambibuity was in whether he was making a left turn or a U turn.
