Genre Outlaw

ralphmeltonOne of my little quirks is an interest in songs covered into other genres, such as the Austin Lounge Lizards' bluegrass cover of Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage".
Today, I decided to make a playlist of those songs in my collection. I was surprised to see that it came to 84 songs, and 5.7 hours of music.
In some cases, I have trouble defining what the "original" genre is, though. For example, the first version of "Just a Gigolo" that I was familiar with was the David Lee Roth version (of which I do not have a copy). So the Village People version probably counts as trans-genre. But what about the Louis Armstrong version, which predates the David Lee Roth version and probably has a better claim to being "original"?

Date: 2004-02-12 11:15 pm (UTC)Back in the late 80s or early 90s, there was a strange show on ABC TV here in Australia called The Money or the Gun. Every week, there was a musical act, but the strange quirk was that the performers were only allowed to perform Led Zepp's "Stairway to Heaven". To make life more interesting, they call all sorts of cover/concept bands in to do it.
On the CD, there's a Doors version, and early Beatles version, a B-52s version, an Elvis version and about 18 others. Most of them are so good you'd swear the original bands were doing the song in their own style.
If you're interested, let me know and I'll see what I can do about getting you a copy.
