My grandmother (my mother's mother) died at around 2am today.

It was hardly a surprise; she had been declining for a long time, and didn't recognize me any more.

But I am feeling sad--which is entirely reasonable.

One of my first responses was to talk with my bosses about how this would impact my work schedule, particularly since we're in final deadline mode there. (My bosses are being entirely supportive, which doesn't surprise me one whit--particularly since I'm being proactive about saying "I'll contribute as much as I can, but we should all know that I might not be as productive and I might be a notch more error-prone.")

I'm very sorry to hear this news. Even after a steady decline, it's not easy to lose someone you love. (I was very surprised that I was so affected when my grandfather, who hadn't recognized me for years, passed away a couple years ago)

You are entitled to be sad. You are also entitled to please let us know if there's anything we can do for you.

I was surprised when I was similarly affected by my grandfather's death. He hadn't recognized me for a couple years and we all knew it was coming, but it's still a bit of a shock when you get the phone call.
