Martyrs

There are hundreds of firefighters dead, scores of police dead.
These people are martyrs.
They have died for a heroic cause.
Let their deaths be not in vain.

I find that the hundreds of rescuers sadden me more than the thousands they were trying to rescue. You go through life and you may get splattered in an accident or worse, and that's the risk we all take. But when the people actively trying to help become the next round of victims, I become very sad.

I heard a quote from a New York firefighter this morning. Essentially, he said "You don't think about the danger to your own life, you just rush in to try and help."
