It's been an up-and-down day so far, mostly unrelated to birthdayness.

I woke early and had trouble returning to sleep.

This meant that it was easy for me to wake to pick up the phone when Lori called to say that her car was making a disturbing noise.

I went out to trade cars with her. Hers was indeed making a disturbing noise. When our local mechanic looked at it an hour later, he agreed. When the mechanic says "Dude, I've never heard a car make a noise like that before", it bodes ill.

When the mechanic called an hour later, he said, "do you have an extended warranty?" which also bodes ill. It sounds to him as if it's a bearing grinding itself up in the transmission, and they don't do transmissions. (I'm just glad this didn't happen while we were driving across the state in that car last weekend.) I made an appointment with the dealership as I walked up to pick up the car.

I still wanted to go in to work. So I decided to experiment with busing in. It turns out that there's a bus that takes a fairly direct route from a stop a few blocks away to my office. I walked down to the stop, and missed one bus. I walked back to the house, and walked back in time to catch the next bus 45 minutes later.

I mention all this walking because after I arrived at the office, I discovered that my new sandals had given me blisters. Ouch.
