bruceb pointed out this game E6, a stripped-down version of D&D in which the characters more or less stay at 6th level.
This really sounds like fun to me, actually. 6th level or so was the point in my campaign where the characters felt powerful but comprehensible--I think there's a lot that could be done with such a game.
