In WotC's Masters of the Wild, a dire elephant (think of the oliphaunts from The Two Towers) is listed as having a climb speed of 10 feet every six seconds.

That's better climbing ability than D&D gives a housecat.

Cats canonically climb faster up than down. The opposite is apt to be true of a dire elephant.
